{"id":12357,"date":"2025-09-23T09:17:43","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T01:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/?p=12357"},"modified":"2026-01-06T11:27:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T03:27:12","slug":"playing-the-long-game-halfway-through-the-european-legends-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/2025\/09\/playing-the-long-game-halfway-through-the-european-legends-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Playing the Long Game &#8211; Halfway Through the European Legends Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s&nbsp;hard to&nbsp;believe&nbsp;that&nbsp;the European Legends Tour has reached the halfway point. At the beginning of the year&nbsp;the&nbsp;tournaments&nbsp;were dotted all over the globe and there were often many weeks separating one event from the other.&nbsp;Perth is a great place to live but it can be quite the journey and quite tiring to travel to somewhere across the globe for just one week. The good news \u2013 I have more frequent flyer miles than Father Xmas!!&nbsp;Since June, the events have been exclusively in Europe and the UK which is far more user friendly for the old boys on this tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following\u00a0the Senior PGA in Scotland, I got to experience two weeks of this year\u2019s heatwave in France. If the temperatures weren\u2019t over\u00a040\u00a0they were 38 or 39\u2026 I guess not so different from a hot Perth summer! Only difference\u2026most places here don\u2019t have aircon!! So,\u00a0of course\u00a0I was looking forward to the cooler temperatures of the English summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From what I have heard, Perth has had its\u00a0wettest winter in many\u00a0years\u00a0but England\u00a0has been\u00a0the opposite. England has experienced one of their driest summers in many, many years\u00a0(I think the\u00a0infamous\u00a0summer of \u201976 is drawing a comparison for those that have lived through both dry spells) resulting in hard and dry golf courses.\u00a0Brocket Hall, a course just north of London,\u00a0could quite easily be the firmest golf course that I have ever played on. The ball was running so far (sometimes annoyingly running off into the trees) that a\u00a0flat,\u00a0480m\u00a0par five\u00a0was reduced to a driver and a wedge. Having said that, the course was a nice\u00a0course\u00a0and the event was enjoyable to play. I didn\u2019t take home the\u00a0trophy\u00a0but my game showed some promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"678\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/m-long-sept.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12358\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, it was to Northern Ireland for the next\u00a0tournament. This event was the furthest thing from warm and dry that I could imagine. The heavens well and truly\u00a0opened up\u00a0and the wind quite literally blew some people off their feet.\u00a0The trifecta of cold, driving rain, and winds up to 60km\/h\u00a0meant\u00a0getting to the clubhouse with your sanity intact was an achievement. The bag was bursting at the seams with plastic bags to keep the gloves dry (2 gloves were not enough), three towels to keep the grips dry, and extra socks and clothes to change at halftime.\u00a0Being a caddy\u00a0on days like these is nothing short of awful\u00a0as the order of keeping\u00a0things\u00a0dry: 1. The player. 2. The\u00a0bag. 3\u2026 a distant 3rd\u00a0\u2013 the caddy.\u00a0However, like most golf courses in Ireland and Northern Ireland, this course was very good. Testing all parts of the game. I played okay but shooting\u00a0a 68 in 60km\/h winds on the final day was good way to finish a physically and mentally challenging tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"572\" height=\"705\" data-id=\"12359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/m-long-sept-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12359\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"899\" data-id=\"12360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/m-long-sept-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/m-long-sept-2.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/m-long-sept-2-570x800.jpeg 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Monday was a travel\u00a0day\u00a0and it was back to Europe\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Spain. The next tournament\u00a0in this run of three events\u00a0was located on the French\/Spanish border in San Sebasti\u00e1n in the Basque region.\u00a0The area is known for many things but recently claiming the bragging rights to having\u00a0the highest concentration of Michelin Star restaurants. Although I didn\u2019t get a chance to\u00a0dine at one of these\u00a0fine restaurants, I did have\u00a0a chance to wander around the historic part of\u00a0the\u00a0town and take in the sights. The golf course is situated up in the hills that surround San\u00a0Sebasti\u00e1n\u00a0and it was a\u00a0very\u00a0challenging walk (think\u00a0the 16th\u00a0hole at\u00a0Araluen),\u00a0especially between the greens and tees. Thank goodness the weather was mild. Although the rounds took just over 5 hours playing in threesomes I was able to recover quickly for the next day. Finishing with my lowest score for the week was a nice way to end the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"552\" height=\"691\" data-id=\"12361\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/m-long-sept-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12361\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"742\" data-id=\"12363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/m-long-sept-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12363\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"470\" height=\"355\" data-id=\"12364\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wembleygolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/m-long-sept-5-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12364\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From San Sebastian\u00a0I headed\u00a0back to France for two weeks\u00a0R&amp;R. From there I will\u00a0head\u00a0to Germany and\u00a0then\u00a0back to\u00a0Perth.
